Statement
Tadao Shoji

I work by reducing snapshots of ordinary scenes to monochrome images, further reversing shadow and light to create an alternate, efalse worldf. Our relation with the real world is becoming increasingly tenuous with the recent drastic development of information technology until our experience of the world is now largely dominated by an accumulation of images obtained through the internet and pseudoexperiences flickering on a television screen. Our communication, formerly enriched by face-to-face contact between people, is now replaced by alternative contact-free means with computer screens and digitised sounds. Our world is shifting gradually and steadily from the real world to a false world. Human figures that linger in the soundless false world effacing their existence in my work are none other than a reflection of the predicament in which humanity finds itself in the world of today.
